Key points: The Roman Empire was very large and powerful. The Romans were a very sophisticated society who borrowed many of their ideas from the Greek Civilization that came before then. Humanists of the Renaissance greatly admired Roman civilization.

2) On the map, show the route of the Silk Road. Also, mark and label on the map the ultimate destination of the Crusades of the Middle Ages. [pages 16 and 21]

Key points: The Silk Road connected European, Islamic and Asian civilizations and allowed for the sharing of ideas and worldviews, material goods, and disease (the plague). The Crusades were a number of journeys undertaken by Medieval Europeans to re-conquer the Holy Land, which was at the time, under Muslim control.

3) Label the following Renaissance City States on the Map: Naples, Rome, Urbino, Florence, Pisa, Genoa, Venice and Milan. [page 29]

SS8 Renaissance: THE COURTIER by Baldassare Castiglione

You may work in partners or work on your own.

Introduction: In his most famous work, “The Courtier,” Baldassare Castiglione writes about the “Renaissance Man,” a well-rounded man educated in a number of areas, someone we might refer to today as a “jack-of-all –trades.” Castiglione was a Coutier himself, that is, a noble who spent much of his time in a Duke’s court (in Urbino, in Italy), with other nobles discussing humanist ideas. This book is written as a conversation between courtiers about what a courtier should be like.

As you read these excerpts from “The Courtier,” paraphrase important sentence or circle anything you don’t understand.

2007 Civic Election

Basic Information:

· In order to vote, you must be 18 years of age, a Canadian citizen, residing in Alberta for at least 6 months and bring ID (driver’s license, passport, birth certificate, etc.)

· Voters will vote for Mayor, Aldermen, School Trustees (public and separate school systems)

o The mayor controls the council’s agenda, and represents the city in higher levels of government

o Aldermen serve on various committees, listen to the grievances of people in their ward and debate city bylaws

o School Trustees: link between the public and the school system, they set policy, allocate resources, etc.

· Before voting you must sign an “Elector’s Statement” declaring that you are eligible to vote and you have not voted before in this election. Signing a false statement could result in prison time for up to six months and a fine of up to $ 10,000

· To be a candidate for Mayor you need to be eligible to vote, 100 signatures and $500

· Calgary’s City Council consists of 14 aldermen elected by residents of their wards and the Mayor who is elected “at large”

What to consider when choosing a candidate:

· Does this person address issues I am concerned about?

· Does this person have any realistic answers?

· Can I see this person following through on their promises? Do they seem trustworthy and professional?

· Does this person seem open to input from Calgarians?

Coat of Arms Assignment

Your coat of arms is a graphic representation of your worldview. Make it personal and be thoughtful about each value you choose to represent. You may cut and paste pictures from magazines or draw pictures and symbols by hand. You do not necessarily have to use the template provided, but your coat of arms must have all the components listed below on it somewhere. Also, it is not necessary that your coat of arms look like a traditional coat of arms from the Middle Ages/Renaissance although that would be very appropriate. So long as you fulfill the guidelines, it may look however you choose.

1) Shield:

Box #1: (Top left) Create two pictures or symbols in the box: Something you want to be good at and something you are good at.

Box#2: (Top right) Create a picture or symbol which represents one of your deepest held values—a value from which you would never budge no matter the situation.

Box#3: (Middle right) In this space depict what you would do if you could achieve anything you wanted do. For example, would you end world poverty? Would you fly to mars?

Box#4: (Bottom right) Design a picture that represents a value held by your family.

Box#5: (Bottom left) Use this space to represent one of the values you wished all people would believe.

Box#6: (Middle left) Represent the person you want to be.

3) Hand in a piece of writing (between ½ and 1 full page in length) explaining how each of the pictures you drew reflects your values and beliefs—your worldview.
